Do You Believe That Jesus Is Your Saviour?

To answer the question, you need to understand what a Saviour is, so let’s start this chapter by looking at the meaning of the word.

Saviour means: “A person who saves someone or something from danger or difficulty.”

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

God loves us so much that He sent His Son to save us from eternal damnation, by dying on the cross. Damnation means eternal punishment in hell. So, God sent us a Saviour, Jesus Christ, to save us.

Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Every one of us is a sinner and destined for eternal punishment in hell, but God sent His Son to save us sinners from this damnation. There are no levels when it comes to sinning — all sin is seen the same to God, so the sins we have committed, or are committing now, do not have an impact on whether we get saved. Jesus Christ came to save all of us.

From Persecutor to Preacher

In the book of Acts 8–9, we read about a man called Saul. The Bible tells us that Saul was a persecutor of Christians. At this stage in his life, he was one of the people who viewed Christianity as a dangerous threat to the Jewish Law. He went around raiding and imprisoning people, causing physical and verbal abuse. He even went as far as approving executions.

In Acts 9, we read that Saul was on his way to Damascus to arrest some of the Christians and bring them back to Jerusalem. On the way, he had an encounter with Jesus, who asked him, “Saul, why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:4). During this encounter he became blind, and remained blind for three days. Jesus spoke to Ananias to go to Saul and heal him. Ananias prayed for Saul and his sight was restored. Saul was baptised, and after that began to preach about Jesus.

If we look at the life of Saul — one that started as a persecutor — Jesus did not say, “I cannot be a Saviour to this person, I did not die on the cross for him because he is a big sinner, he persecutes me.” No, Jesus was still a Saviour to Saul. Jesus does not care about what we did in the past; all He cares about is what we are going to do now that we have read and realised that He can save us. He cares about you, even though your past may seem bad to you and to everyone else. He cares about the decision you are going to make now, to accept Him, to believe that He is the Saviour — your Saviour.

Saul believed that Jesus was his Saviour, and he was transformed from a persecutor into the Apostle Paul, a bold preacher of Jesus. Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. He died on the cross to pay for all our sins. For this payment to work for you, all you need to do is believe and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour over your life.

Saul answered the question — yes, I believe that Jesus is my Saviour — and made the decision to surrender his life to Jesus, so that Jesus could wipe his past clean and forgive him for all the sins he had committed.

What are you going to do? Are you ready to answer the question — yes, I believe — and allow Jesus to wipe your past clean and forgive you for all your sins?

You may find thoughts coming into your mind, saying that the sins you have done are too big, that Jesus will never accept you. But look again at Saul: a sinner with a terrible past, who did not let what he had done or how his life looked stop him. He made the decision to allow Jesus to wipe his past, and he started following Jesus.

Remember, there is no such thing as a big or small sin. Jesus does not care how bad your past is — He will accept you no matter what your past looks like, and it can be called the past, because once you say yes, I believe, your previous life of sin becomes exactly that: the past. All you need to do now is focus on the future, a new life in Christ.

Don’t let the thought that you are not good enough stop you from answering the question — yes, I believe that Jesus is my Saviour.
